Aphrodite applying eyeshadow to a client during a makeup lesson in Doreen

Makeup lessons · Doreen, Melbourne

Aphrodite

Learn to do your own makeup — properly.

You already own the products. You were just never taught what to do with them. In one four-hour class — five of us at most — you'll learn your own face, and walk out able to repeat it on a Tuesday morning without thinking.

Small classes of five, taught in Doreen

Sound familiar?

A drawer full of products. And still the same five minutes.

Most women aren't bad at makeup. They were simply never shown how their own face works — so they copy a tutorial made for someone else's bone structure and wonder why it looks wrong.

  • We work on your face, not a model's

Eye shape, skin type, undertone, the bits you'd rather not photograph. Everything is mapped to you.

  • You hold the brush the whole time

This isn't a makeover you watch. Your hands do the work — that's the only way it sticks.

  • Nothing to buy, nothing to bring

A full professional kit is set up and waiting, with a complete depth range. You'll try things on your own skin before you spend a cent, and leave with a list of what's actually worth buying.

Lessons & prices

Choose the face you actually need

The Four-Hour Class is where most people start — small enough that you get real attention, long enough to practise it properly. Private lessons are available too. Everything includes your own face chart, and all prices are in AUD.

The Four-Hour Class

4 hoursUp to 5 peopleEverything providedEvenings & weekends

Four hours, five people at most, and enough good light for everyone. We match your shades from the class kit, then work across skin, complexion, brows, eyes and lip — and you do every step yourself while I move between you. Long enough to actually practise it twice, which is the part that makes it stick.

  • Everything provided — a full professional kit, nothing to buy first
  • Your own face chart, written and photographed
  • A shopping list matched to your budget, if you want one
  • Wednesday and Friday 6–10pm, or Saturday and Sunday 8:30am–12:30pm

The method

Four steps. Four hours. Yours for good.

  1. Colour match

We find your shades from the class kit — complexion, brow, blush, lip — tested on your skin in daylight, not under a shop light.

  2. Face mapping

Eye shape, brow bone, undertone, texture. We mark where light should sit on your face, not a generic diagram.

  3. You apply

Half the face with me, half on your own, mirror in hand. I move between you, correcting grip, pressure and angle.

  4. Your chart

Photographed, written, emailed before you're home — plus a shopping list matched to your budget, so you can build your own kit slowly.

Thirty days of follow-up, included

Practising at home is where it clicks — and where the questions appear. Send a photo any time in the month after your lesson and you'll get a real answer back, not a link to a video.

Aphrodite, the makeup teacher behind Makeup by Aphrodite in Doreen

Your teacher

Hi, I'm Aphrodite

Fifteen years ago I started behind a department store counter in the city — the kind of job where you're taught to sell a serum in ninety seconds. Editorial work came next, then weddings, hundreds of them. And somewhere in the middle of all of it I kept noticing the same thing: women buying beautiful products that nobody had ever actually taught them to use.

So I stopped doing makeup on people and started teaching it instead. Fifteen years of watching what genuinely holds up on real faces — in bathroom lighting, in a hurry, on a Tuesday morning before work — is the whole curriculum. There's no trend in it and nothing you need to keep buying. Just what suits you, and why it works.

These days the whole practice runs out of a bright, private room in a community space in Doreen: good light, a proper chair, a cup of tea, and a rule that you don't leave until you've done it yourself and liked what you saw in the mirror.

  • Fifteen years, qualified & insured

Diploma of Specialist Makeup Services, full public liability insurance and a current Working with Children Check.

  • Every face, every age

Mature and hooded eyes, deeper skin tones, rosacea, acne scarring, alopecia and chemo brows.

  • Brand agnostic

I sell no products and take no commissions. Recommendations are honest, and often cheaper than you'd expect.

Where we meet

A community learning space
in Doreen

A private, well-lit room in Melbourne’s north — proper chairs, good light, free parking at the door and step-free access. Not a shopfront, and not someone’s lounge room. Just a calm space to learn in.

Why learn here

A new class.
Not a new artist.

The Doreen classes started this year — the fifteen years behind them did not. Here’s exactly what I bring to your four hours, and what you can hold me to on the day.

  • Fifteen years, professionally

Editorial shoots, hundreds of weddings, and a long stretch on a department store counter in the city. Not a hobby that turned into a business.

  • Qualified, insured, checked

Diploma of Specialist Makeup Services, full public liability insurance and a current Working with Children Check — happy to show any of it.

  • Every face, every age

A full depth range in the kit, and real experience with mature and hooded eyes, rosacea, acne scarring, vitiligo, alopecia and chemo brows.

  • Nothing to sell you

I stock no retail and take no brand commissions. If the best thing for your skin is a $12 chemist buy, that’s what I’ll tell you.

What you can hold me to

  1. You hold the brush

You will have done the look yourself, on your own face, before you leave the room. Not watched me do it.

  2. You leave with your chart

Every product and placement, written and photographed, in your inbox before you’re home.

  3. Thirty days of questions

Send a photo any time in the month afterwards and get a real answer back, not a link to a video.

  4. An honest yes or no

If I’m not the right teacher for what you’re after, I’ll say so before you pay a deposit.

Questions

Before you book

No — everything is provided. A full professional kit is set up and ready, including a complete depth range of complexion products, so you’ll be learning with proper tools on your own face. Just arrive with clean, moisturised skin and about four hours. If you’d like advice on makeup you already own, you’re very welcome to bring it and we’ll go through it together, but nothing is required.

It’s the part I’m strictest about. Products are decanted onto a sanitised palette rather than used straight from the tube, applicators and sponges are single-use and yours to keep, brushes are cleaned between every person, and anything that can’t be sanitised properly simply isn’t in the kit. If you have a sensitivity, an allergy or an eye condition, mention it when you book and I’ll set your station up separately.

Those are my favourite lessons. The goal is never "more makeup" — it's knowing five minutes of it well enough that you're not thinking about your face for the rest of the day. Plenty of clients leave using fewer products than they arrived with.

Lessons are held in a private room at a community venue in Doreen, VIC 3754. You’ll get the exact address, the room name and a photo of the entrance with your booking confirmation, so there’s no wandering around looking for it. There’s free parking on site and step-free access from the car park to the room. If you’re coming by train, Mernda Station is about a ten-minute drive. Home visits are also available within 20 km — Mernda, South Morang, Whittlesea, Epping, Diamond Creek, Eltham and Greensborough — for a small travel fee.

Move your booking free of charge up to 48 hours beforehand — just reply to your confirmation email. Inside 48 hours the deposit transfers to a new date once. Life in Melbourne happens; I'd rather you rebooked than pushed through a bad day.

Yes, and the kit is stocked for it — a full depth range of complexion products, plus dedicated approaches for hooded and mature eyes, rosacea, acne scarring, vitiligo, alopecia and chemo brows. If you have a specific concern, mention it in your enquiry and I'll tell you honestly whether I'm the right teacher.

Yes. The venue has step-free access and free parking directly outside, so there are no stairs between the car and the chair. If you have a specific access need — a walking frame or wheelchair, needing to stay seated throughout, low vision, sensitivity to fragrance, or anything else — mention it in your enquiry and I’ll have the room set up before you arrive. Nothing about it will be awkward.

A deposit holds your spot and the balance is due on the day, by card, cash or bank transfer. Gift vouchers are paid in full and are valid for three years. All prices include GST and a tax invoice is issued automatically.
